Importance of Agricultural Technologies

The world of agriculture is constantly changing and advancing. The agricultural industry is very important to society and the economy. Agriculture isn’t just growing a few corn crops and feeding a few cows. Agriculture is the basis of society. Without agriculture, there would be no food, clothing, or natural fibres. Farmers are dedicated to what they do. So whenever you see a farmer, be sure to thank them for all their hard work.

Agriculture in Canada:

Canada is one of the largest agricultural producers and exporters in the world. The major agricultural products consist of grains, oil seeds, livestock, dairy production, crops, viticulture, poultry and eggs, and fur.Outside of almost every city is vast farmland. Most industrial crop farming is done in the prairies where the land is flatter and easier to maintain. Most Canadian dairy comes from Ontario. Beef cattle are commonly raised in Alberta and Ontario. From small farms, to enormous operations, there are many agricultural businesses across the country. Each important to our economy and our society.

Technology isn’t always a shiny new iPhone. Technology in agriculture starts with something as simple as changing the shape of a trowel for ergonomic benefit. The most recognizable piece of agricultural technology is the tractor.

History of the Tractor:

A tractor is a vehicle designed to provide a high pulling force at slow speeds, in order to haul machinery used in agriculture. The first powered farming technologies date back to the 1800’s. In 1892, John Froelich built the first practical gasoline powered tractor. In Britain, the first recorded tractor sale was the oil-burning Hornsby-Ackroyd Patent Safety Oil Traction engine, in 1897. The classic farm tractor is a simple open vehicle, with two very large driving wheels on an axle below and slightly behind a single drivers seat, and smaller front steering wheels. Present day tractors are a necessity to the agricultural industry. Without this single advancement, farming would still be done by hand. Leading to the inability to produce for such a large modern day population.

Latest Agricultural Advancements:

There are so many new technologies in our modern society. Technology is designed to better our work efforts and improve productivity. Within agriculture, there are many new aspects of technology. There is use of geothermal imaging, nanotechnologies, environmental efforts, use of satellite imagery for self driving tractors, and much more.

Future of Agricultural Technologies:

As the global population grows, the demand for food increases. Agriculture is the production of food. Without farming, there wouldn’t be any food. With the growing concern of world hunger, scientists and engineers are looking into ways of technology to improve the productivity of the agricultural industry. Technological solutions such as robotics are becoming more popular within the industry. Another growing technology is gene modification of plants by use of incredible nanotechnologies. This allows scientists to improve plants at the molecular level. Our world is becoming so technological based. It is important that we embrace these technologies. We can predict the future of farming, but we are always looking for more ways to innovate. Innovation produces better ideas and better technologies.
